Headaches & Migraines

Cervicogenic headaches are characterised by pain which radiates from the neck into the head. These are most often caused by dysfunction to the structures in the cervical spine and surrounding tissue. Common symptoms include head-pain that is often one-sided, neck pain and stiffness, and pain that may be worsened by certain neck positions. Other symptoms may include dizziness, nausea or visual changes. With a large percentage of the population having sedentary lifestyles and office jobs, the prevalence of cervicogenic headaches is on the rise.

Migraines are usually more severe in intensity than a headache, and occur in recurring episodes of throbbing or pulsating head pain that is often one-sided. Other symptoms may be preceded or occur with a migraine, including sensitivities to light and sound, nausea and visual changes. Migraines are more prevalent in women, and may peak with hormonal changes.

Common causes of cervicogenic headaches and migraines include:

  • Neck injuries, including concussion and whiplash

  • Cervical spine pathology, including osteoarthritis, facet joint dysfunction, disc bulges and herniations, and degenerative disc disease

  • Poor posture

  • Muscle imbalances

  • Genetics

  • Environmental factors, such as certain foods, smells, and bright lights

  • Hormonal changes

  • Stress and emotional factors

  • Poor sleep
